All About Infertility

Trying to Have Children?

For many men and women, the topic of infertility can be a difficult one. It may be difficult to admit to yourself, let alone your partner, that you or they may be infertile. However, if you have been trying to have children with your partner without success for a long duration, then you or they may suffer from infertility. While the process of becoming pregnant may seem easy, the actual biological process is a lot more difficult than you might realize.

There are many factors that contribute as to whether or not you are able to conceive. For one, a man needs to have a healthy sperm count in order to increase the chances of conceiving. However, the woman also needs to have a healthy number of eggs, and healthy eggs in general, for the sperm to attach to in the first place. A woman’s Fallopian tubes also need to be unlocked in order for the sperm to reach the egg. It’s also up to the sperm cell itself to be up to the job of fertilizing the egg once it reaches it. Not all sperm cells are healthy enough to do that. Yet the egg itself also needs to be healthy enough to become fertilized in the first place. Essentially, both the man and woman need to have a good number and quality of eggs and sperm cells in order for a child to be conceived. This article will discuss other factors about infertility and some steps you can take to help your fertility.

Getting Tested

If you believe that yourself or your partner may be infertile, then you can have a test performed to determine just that. Embryos will be removed to determine the state of their health and count. Sperm cells will also be examined to determine their health. If either of you is found to be infertile, you can be given a few options to help promote fertility as well as be given options to still have children.

Treatment Options

For women who are infertile due to structural problems in their reproductive system, you may opt for a surgical procedure that can get rid of the problem of your eggs not being able to be fertilized by sperm cells. You may also want to consider in vitro fertilization or Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART.) In vitro fertilization involves the process of removing a series of embryos from the body and mixing them with sperm cells in a petri dish. Once the egg has been fertilized, it is replaced within the woman’s uterus. This allows the baby to be developed naturally within the body while still bypassing the Fallopian tubes.

Infertility: What Are My Treatment Options?

You’ve always known that you wanted to be a mother, and now you are ready for the next chapter in your life. You and your partner want to welcome a baby into your family. You thought it would happen naturally. You tried for over a year to conceive. You did not become pregnant even though you kept track of your peak times for ovulation. Fortunately, there are treatment options that can help you to become pregnant if you are struggling with infertility issues.

What Could be Causing Your Infertility?

There are various reasons that you may not be able to conceive. You could be dealing with problems with your fallopian tubes. You could be struggling with a problem that revolves around your cervix. Issues with your uterus may be a concern. If you have endometriosis, this can cause scar tissue to build up in your reproductive organs, making conception difficult. The only way to get to the root cause of your infertility is to be fully evaluated by medical professionals. Once you know the cause, you can find the right treatment alternative.

How Can You Treat Your Infertility?

If hormones are contributing to your infertility problems, we may be able to prescribe hormone replacement therapy or fertility drugs to restore balance. If there is an issue with your fallopian tubes, uterus, or cervix, surgery may be the best solution. When these measures are not effective, you may be a candidate for intrauterine insemination in which semen is inserted in your uterus. You may be able to try in vitro fertilization, in which embryos are inserted into your uterus. In some cases, you may need to use sperm or eggs that have been donated. You may go through a series of treatments before you finally have the ability to become pregnant.

Find Specialized Infertility Treatments in Fort Worth

It can take up to a year for the average, healthy woman under 35 to conceive. After the age of 35, a pregnancy is certainly possible, but it may take even longer. At-home methods of conception, such as using a calendar to track the woman’s monthly cycle or using an ovulation detection kit, are a great place to start, but are not always effective. If you and your partner have been trying to have a baby and have not had any luck, it may be time to seek out infertility treatments in Fort Worth to make sure nothing is amiss.

Understanding Infertility

One of the most important aspects to keep in mind while you’re trying to conceive is that most healthy people are not completely infertile. Women may have gynecological issues and still be able to conceive with help. Men may have a low sperm count that can be overcome with IUI or IVF. Unless there is an anatomical issue, there are usually treatments you can use to raise your odds of conception.

The Testing Phase

Before you can begin treatments for infertility, we will need to run tests to help narrow down the cause. Both partners will need to be tested. For men, a sperm sample may be all that is needed. For women, blood tests, a pelvic exam and an ultrasound are standard procedure. Blood work will reveal any hormonal issues that might be preventing conception, while a pelvic exam and an ultrasound can help rule out any physical abnormalities. Something as small as a benign polyp on the uterine wall can stymie your efforts to get pregnant, so it’s best to be thorough. From there, we can come up with a specialized infertility treatment for you.

Seeking Infertility Treatments in Fort Worth

The media portrayal of pregnancy leads many people to believe that a woman can perfectly plan her family. Women on television and in movies announce they are trying for a baby and are obviously expecting in no time. In real life, it can take a healthy woman a year or more to get pregnant. Furthermore, older women may take even longer. If you are in Fort Worth and have been trying to conceive for a year or more, it may be time to seek out infertility treatments at our center.

Starting the Process

If you’ve been working with your gynecologist or family doctor and have already tried conservative measures for infertility, don’t be worried about asking for a referral. Your doctor will not be offended if you decide to see a fertility specialist. If you haven’t started with conservative measures yet and don’t have a health care provider to work with you, you can choose to begin at a fertility specialist or a fertility clinic right away.

The Testing Phase

Before starting infertility treatments, both partners will need to go through some tests to check for issues. For males, STD tests and a sperm sample are standard. If the sperm sample is good, the man is fertile. For females, the process is a bit more involved. There will need to be both blood work and physical exams to check for signs of problems that could be impacting your fertility. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, endometriosis, scar tissue, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, female athletic triad, hormonal imbalances and more may all need to be ruled out. Once the testing is complete, you can start treatments.

Infertility Treatment Options

Your treatment plan is drawn up with your input. If issues were found in the testing phase, sometimes simply correcting them or treating them will restore your fertility. If no issues were found and your cycle is predictable, our fertility specialist may want to watch you for a few months by scanning you with an ultrasound machine during your cycle. This allows us to watch the growth of your follicles to ensure they are maturing properly.

If you are not comfortable with more aggressive measures such as IUI or IVF treatments, our fertility specialist will respect your limits. At no point will you be pressured to accept treatments you feel are “too much” for you. Don’t be afraid to speak up about your limits and what you would like to try, as there are many different options available.

Deciding to have a child and then failing to get pregnant can be a disheartening experience. If you have been trying and haven’t had luck, schedule an informative consultation with us at Fort Worth Center for Pelvic Medicine. We are committed to helping our patients grow their families and would be delighted to help you with yours. Contact our office in Fort Worth today to schedule your first appointment and learn about our infertility treatments.

How Do Infertility Treatments Work?

Some women can get pregnant on the first attempt. For others, it’s not that simple. If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for quite some time now without success, we may recommend that you begin the process of infertility treatments. Since there are different routes that can be taken depending on your specific situation, it can be confusing to navigate the treatment process. Don’t give up hope. Dr. Johns and his team of professionals at Fort Worth Center for Pelvic Medicine are here to help you every step of the way.

In the early stages of infertility treatment, you may undergo non-invasive treatments depending on the source of the infertility. There are some common options that fall into this category. Those with endometriosis may be able to conceive after laparoscopic surgery to remove the excess tissue from the lining of the uterus.

If these treatments are unsuccessful after a certain period of time, Dr. Johns may refer you to another medical professional. Advanced Reproductive Technology (ART) could help you conceive a child. In-Vitro Fertilization is another treatment that may work for you. With this treatment, an egg is fertilized in a lab and then the embryo is placed directly into the woman’s cervix.

If you no longer produce eggs, you may opt to combine your partner’s sperm with a donor egg; if neither the egg nor sperm is viable, a donor embryo may be implanted directly into the uterus. If you are unable to carry a child, gestational surrogacy is another option in which your embryo or a donor embryo is carried to term by another woman.

Each of these infertility treatments varies in success rate, as well as benefits and drawbacks. Honest conversations with your partner, your OB/GYN and our fertility specialist can help you better understand your options and arrive at a treatment plan that makes sense for your individual situation.

Have you and your partner been trying to conceive for quite some time to no avail? If so, you are not alone. Many couples struggle in this area. Make an appointment at Fort Worth Center for Pelvic Medicine to learn about your options regarding infertility treatments. We are proud to offer a variety of services at our office in Fort Worth ranging from MonaLisa Touch® to gynecological ultrasounds. Contact us today to schedule a consultation to learn more!
