What Causes Leaky Bladder?

Leaky bladder, also referred to as urinary incontinence, describes the inability of a patient to control the passage of their urine. This problem can range from occasional leakage during daily activities to the complete inability to hold in urine.

There are three types of urinary incontinence:

  1. Stress Incontinence: Characterized by the loss of small amounts of urine during activities like sneezing, coughing, laughing, or exercising.
  2. Urge Incontinence: Characterized by the strong, sudden need to urinate, followed by involuntary loss of urine.
  3. Mixed Incontinence: A combination of both stress and urge incontinence. This is the most common type of urinary incontinence.

How Common is Leaky Bladder?

Troubles with a leaky bladder are more common than most women think. While this problem can occur at any age, it becomes particularly common as women get older. In a recent study, it was estimated that 1 in 5 women suffer from some degree of leaky bladder problems; however, the actual number is probably much higher. This is because many women are embarrassed about their urinary incontinence, and are reluctant to discuss it even with their doctors.

What are my Treatment Options?

Depending on the causes and symptoms of your individual case, your treatment options for leaky bladder will vary. During your consultation appointment, our practice’s board-certified Urogynecologist, will evaluate your unique condition and decide what medical therapy or surgical procedure will be most beneficial to you.

Don’t let a leaky bladder get in the way of your self-confidence and quality of life. At Fort Worth Center for Pelvic Medicine, we’re proud to offer our patients access to the medical and surgical care they need to correct urinary incontinence and allow them to lead happy, healthy lives. Contact our Fort Worth, Texas office today for more information about our practice or the life-changing treatments we provide our patients. We look forward to hearing from you!
