What Causes Leaky Bladder?
Leaky bladder, also referred to as urinary incontinence, describes the inability of a patient to control the passage of their urine. This problem can range from occasional leakage during daily activities to the complete inability to hold in urine.
There are three types of urinary incontinence:
- Stress Incontinence: Characterized by the loss of small amounts of urine during activities like sneezing, coughing, laughing, or exercising.
- Urge Incontinence: Characterized by the strong, sudden need to urinate, followed by involuntary loss of urine.
- Mixed Incontinence: A combination of both stress and urge incontinence. This is the most common type of urinary incontinence.
How Common is Leaky Bladder?
Troubles with a leaky bladder are more common than most women think. While this problem can occur at any age, it becomes particularly common as women get older. In a recent study, it was estimated that 1 in 5 women suffer from some degree of leaky bladder problems; however, the actual number is probably much higher. This is because many women are embarrassed about their urinary incontinence, and are reluctant to discuss it even with their doctors.
What are my Treatment Options?
Depending on the causes and symptoms of your individual case, your treatment options for leaky bladder will vary. During your consultation appointment, our practice’s board-certified Urogynecologist, will evaluate your unique condition and decide what medical therapy or surgical procedure will be most beneficial to you.
